dc.description.abstract Italy, apart from rare exceptions, today shows a significant delay in the field of anti-sprawl regulations; in most part of Europe the new buildings in fact take place (by law) on brownfields, on areas already urbanized. Parallel to this phenomenon, the architecture has become primacy of the image, formal invention, ostentation of technology, becoming more and more distant from the construction of the city. Today, due to the global financial crisis, or perhaps because of it, there is a reversal trend. The architecture renews its being a necessary practice, back to thinking about the project in terms of problem solving or social urgency, and not only in terms of aesthetics or communicative impact. After many incursions into the world of arts, science, sociology, architecture today has the duty to return to affect on the processes of transformation of the city. The crux of density and the housing issue, the reinvention of the public space and the new direction of the city-landscape are the values to reflect on. en_US
